Escritor francés. Hijo de un profesor de derecho, Gide comenzó a escribir a temprana edad. Uno de sus primeros poemas en prosa,
Los alimentos terrestres (1897), refleja una conciencia creciente de su homosexualidad. Las novelas cortas

Los monederos falsos (1926) es su novela más compleja. Se transformó en un defensor de las víctimas y de los marginados de la sociedad, y por un tiempo fue atraído por el comunismo; con el estallido de la segunda guerra mundial desarrolló un aprecio por la tradición. En 1947 obtuvo del Premio Nobel de Literatura.
